This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When it comes to the wonder of reading, Dr. Seuss said it best, “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” But how do we make sure that every student has the opportunity to read, learn, and “go” all those amazing places that reading can take them?

My students are struggling readers who need the opportunity to become capable learners.

The kindergarten through third-grade students I work with are reading well below grade level. Having struggled with basic reading skills, they need intensive, targeted intervention to help them improve their reading, which is vital to their success in all academic areas.

To add to their reading challenges, my students live in a low-income neighborhood where they face numerous disadvantages. Unable to control what goes on outside of school, I try to make the most of their time with me by doing what I can do to maximize their learning. They need engaging literacy instruction and rich, meaningful learning that will help them overcome their challenges and experience that 'wonder of reading.'

My Project

Technology continues to transform the world of teaching. In order to keep up with the fast-paced digital world in which our students are growing up, teachers must be tech-saavy and innovative in order to meet the needs of students. We must employ technological tools and equipment that can engage diverse students in rigorous and meaningful learning. As a reading interventionist, I need technology that can meet this challenge while enabling me to adapt to my students' diverse instructional needs, both remotely and in person.

Touchscreen technology is one such innovation that can help me accomplish the challenge of instructing my students and keeping them engaged.

A touchscreen laptop lends itself to a multitude of instructional possibilities: interacting onscreen with students via shared documents or apps, providing immediate feedback to students, and activities that make valuable use of the touchscreen devices students use themselves. In addition, combining the touchscreen capability with digital teaching and presentation tools can support explicit instruction, modeling, and assessment of the literacy skills my students are missing. This useful technological tool can support my students learning in hybrid, remote, and in-person settings, making it a versatile addition to my teaching.
