Teaching Tolerance: Open a Book, Open a Mind

Help me give my students culturally diverse books. The books in our media center are old and outdated. The students in my school need to read contemporary and inclusive works of literature.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a 100% magnet school, and is very competitive. The students who come here have worked extremely hard to be accepted. They are some of the best and brightest students in the county, and are the students who will be the leaders of tomorrow.

In order to become global citizens who understand the world they are going to inherit and lead, students need to learn to appreciate diversity and embrace differences.

They need to be exposed to the history, literature, and cultures of different countries in our ever-shrinking world. They should have access to literature about characters that are not exactly the same as them so they can learn to see things from someone else's perspective. Opening the right book can help someone change how, and what, they see.

My Project

My students need culturally-diverse books for several reasons. Primarily, to be able to see themselves in the characters of the books. Secondly, to help them develop empathy and an understanding of marginalized groups they may not have first-hand knowledge about. And lastly, to understand that the world is much bigger than what immediately surrounds them.

Reading a variety of books can open minds, and teach students to value and respect each others differences.

The books in our media center are outdated, and our students deserve to have modern books that will expose them to what life is like for their fellow global citizens.
