My Students

I am a departmentalized math and science teacher to 60 amazing third graders that attend a turnaround school on the southeast side of Chicago. My students are considered high-needs and have many stressors compared to the average 9 to 10 year-old. Because of this, I work very hard to make sure my students receive the learning, resources, and exposure they need to surpass what some statistics may say.

Students are reminded everyday that they are at school to not only grow academically but grow emotionally, socially, and physically, as well, to achieve their dreams.

In my classroom, we support each other, no matter what. We build off of each other's strengths and weaknesses, and celebrate our differences. Additionally, at our school we believe that all students can achieve no matter what. We do not make assumptions and always set high expectations.

My Project

A shift in education is starting to take place and with each passing day students are expected to do more learning online, whether that be remotely or in person. While this is an exciting shift and promotes more individualized learning, independence, and 21st century skills, not all students have the same opportunities or access to technology to benefit from this shift.

During the COVID-19 pandemic much of our school supply of Chromebooks were distributed to students who did not have access to technology at home to access the learning materials.

Once technology was distributed, there was a steep learning curve in figuring out how to use the device and log into the proper programs. As a third grade teacher, many parents were reaching out trying to help support their child. This opened my eyes and my plan for next school year started to shift.

I need these Chromebooks in my classroom to teach students how to access learning and resources online. Students are expected to do more on computers now than just logging into learning platforms that their schools have purchased. Learning to be a problem solver online presents different challenges then with paper pencil. Distractions, ads, websites, usernames, passwords, locating different symbols on a keyboard, and viruses can quickly present challenges that my students were not prepared for.

I will use these Chromebooks to open the door to learning online. Not for in case there is another pandemic, but to prepare them for this shift in technology usage in education, careers, and beyond.
