My Students

"Teachers open the door, but you must enter by yourself" - a Chinese proverb embodied in my teaching. Though pupils must walk through the door by themselves, they do not have to do it alone. I want to bring math, science, and social studies to life by connecting students to reality found online.

A majority of the students in my class come from middle class, double-income homes.

They are the children of hardworking parents who support our school's emphasis on the foundation of academics leading to a college education. Each classroom has a college connection, and as students progress in grade levels from year to year, their eyes are opened to new colleges and the many opportunities those colleges provide. Some of my students participate in after school activities that enhance their lives, but unfortunately, a growing number are unable to do so. My students belong to a school that is a part of a tight knit community - one whose families look after each other. I have seen firsthand, the interest that technology brings to my students (and others for that matter). Learning comes alive whenever books are supplemented with videos, computers, and the internet. When the fire of learning is stoked by technology that these kids experience, the knowledge they gain is limitless.

My Project

Our school district adopted a new math curriculum called "GO Math!" The concepts taught are "foreign" to the students, as well as almost all of the parents with whom I have spoken, and the lessons take longer to teach than the past. Parents have expressed their confusion as to why the lessons are taught the way they are, instead of the "traditional" lessons they learned as kids. With your generosity of the iPad donation, I would like to "flip the classroom" by using it to create/post videos online how the lessons will be taught in class, so that students (and parents) learn how to solve problems at home. By viewing the videos, they get to see exactly how the lessons are taught. Then, students come to school the next day with the benefit of being able to ask questions or get additional help to get a better understanding of the lessons, instead of seeing it for the first time. Later, I would like to expand the use of the iPad by integrating science/social studies lessons.

My project is important because it will bridge the gap of the students' knowledge and understanding in a way they will find engaging.

They will be able to "rewind" the videos as often as they or their parents need to in order to understand the lessons. I ask that you please find it in your hearts to "help me open the door" for my students and join me in guiding them as "they enter by themselves," but not alone because of the knowledge they have gained to prepare them for tomorrow. Thank you.
