My Project

Thank you for considering my project to teach the importance of financial literacy to teenagers. As an English teacher, I have many opportunities where the discussion about money and finances come up naturally in the classroom. When I teach Guy de Maupassant's short story "The Necklace," with the dangers of spending more than you make, I'd love to have some resources to reference and suggest to my students. When we study George Orwell and his life struggles, this would also be a perfect spring board into financial literacy. At the beginning of the year, as an introduction, we think about lifestyles they might want when they are older and careers that go along with that lifestyle versus how much they might make and what they can afford. It is quite an eye-opener to the students!

Having financial resources such as I Want More Pizza: Real World Money Skills For High School, College, And Beyond in the classroom that they can reference and read, and that I can create lessons with, would partner nicely with several units that I teach throughout the year.

My sister works for Wells Fargo, and has come into my school previously, to talk to middle schoolers about money tips. Now that I teach in High School, it is just as crucial and they are starting to seek employment. What a perfect time to get them thinking about it!
