I am currently a third grade teacher in the Bronx. My students are from low-income families, and mostly consists of Spanish and African American background. My students struggle with comprehension skills, that are needed to function in every area of their school and home life. I am trying to model and give them the chance to experience making these real life connections to different types of reading. This is a skill that will stay with them throughout their lives. By modeling how to decode and comprehend various texts I am opening a door that makes reading more accessible and less scary to my students. The library will then allow them a chance to read various texts on their levels and practice the skills I have modeled for them. I am constantly adding to the classroom library in order to keep interest high, students need to have access to a wide range of material to keep interest levels up. I truly feel if we can reach their love for books and learning now, it is a something that will stay with them. Also this will open doors to many other subject areas, because these comprehension skills are necessary to process what they are reading. It has been said that if students do not know how to read by the third grade, they will never know how to read. My hope is that no student in my classroom ever leaves in that situation. I hope you will help me in this quest to boost reading and comprehension skills in the third grade!
