My Students

I work in a setting that is completely devoted to working with students with special needs. This is my first year as a 6:1:1 high school special education teacher primarily working with students with autism and intellectual disabilities. Most of my students are non-verbal. They are so remarkable though! I admire that they come to school ready to work. They are truly my reason for coming to work. They amaze me every day. I have made it my mission as an educator to focus on my students' abilities. After all, Dr. Temple Grandin affirms that "the world needs all kinds of minds".

My Project

Daily living skills are skills that allow individuals to operate independently in the community and at home. This enables these individuals to take ownership of their own lives. This is of utmost importance working with students with special needs. We have started teaching students skills in regards to caring for their personal hygiene which has been successful. Now it is time to progress to other domains of daily living skills.

Using items like the Swiffer and vacuum, my students will learn how to independently do household chores.

Additionally, items like the microwave and Magic Bullet will enable them to learn how independently prepare meals. This project will undoubtedly enrich my students daily lives.
