My Project

Imagine your favorite picture books as a child. Remember how they stuck with you with their vivid pictures and rhyming words? You may have even purchased them later for your own children or gave them as gifts to other children in your life. The format of picture books has many advantages when it comes to engaging students in a STEM lesson. Both fiction and non-fiction books stimulate children on both emotional and intellectual levels. Children connect with the imaginative images, interesting storylines, and unique information.

This is the kind of emotional connection I want to give to my science students when I introduce key concepts such as observations, inferences, data, and exemplary evidence.

The class set of these two books will do just that. Over 40% of my students are on free and reduced lunch. Many of the students I teach are non-English speaking and I am also a special education inclusive classroom. These types of books provide the type of visual and emotional learning that so many of my students desperately need. Many of my students did not have access to picture books growing up and these books could open up a whole new world to them.

My 5th grade Science class is the first science class many of my students will take. I want them to see that science is accessible to the them. I want them to be excited about becoming scientists themselves and I feel like these books help accomplish that goal.
