My Students

I have a very large class of fourth graders. We start each day by saying good morning with handshakes and how do you dos. It is so important for me to teach my students to be confident, independent and responsible young people.

We are a small community school where everyone knows each other.

About 80 percent of the students in my school receive free and reduced lunch because their families struggle making ends meet. Many students do not have safe places to go to after the afternoon bell rings because their situations are so difficult. I have 34 students in my class and they are absolutely amazing young people full of ambition, kindness, and thoughtfulness. I know they will be successful when given opportunities to shine.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of By the Great Horn Spoon by Newberry Award Winner Sid Fleischman. In the past, we have been able to borrow enough books from surrounding schools to make it possible for us to read it together. That is no longer an option this year. This is a wonderful book that describes in great detail the California Gold Rush through the eyes of a twelve year old boy. As we read students create a mini-book of their own where they keep important words, phrases and illustrations that stuck with them as they were reading. I use it to teach similes and metaphors, geography, and grammar. It also lends itself nicely to class discussions on character traits such as perseverance and empathy. When reading this book students are really able to imagine themselves in California during the 1800s and that is an invaluable experience.

This project will be a lasting one.

This class set of books will stay with my classroom and be passed down to future classes for many years. Many of my students are still learning the joy of reading.They read because they have to rather than because they enjoy it. I have found that they can easily get swept up in this book and go on this adventure with Jack and Praiseworthy. It can ignite the passion for reading that all learners need to possess.
