My Students

My classroom is filled with an incredible and diverse group of young adults. During the year we tackle tough scientific topics and skills. We create, dialogue, research, and collaborate with one another. We push against the boundaries of what we thought we could learn. Growth mindset and mindfulness weave throughout each week alongside lessons about our place and impact on the world. Some of my students recently arrived in the U.S. and most have been here their whole lives, but few have traveled beyond the borders of their town.

We're going to explore the world through the lens of science and allow them to become global 21st century citizens.

As an International Baccalaureate school, we seek to provide students with a well rounded education engaging them in issues related to the community and beyond, focusing on the fact that all issues in the community are issues experienced globally.

My Project

As I teach from home, my students will need more engaging ways to get them interested in reading about science topics. Since every student has a different way of learning and a different way of taking in material, I want them to be able to access comics which are related to Biology and Environmental Science to help them increase their literacy skills and be able to have a command of the key terms.

Students will receive scanned PDFs of the comic pages and be presented with the opportunity to do an assignment based on a traditional textbook model OR through reading the comics, which include the same assessment given to students who chose the textbook approach.

This will help differentiate for those students who need more support, or who learn differently.

I will use the teachers pay teachers gift cards to purchase science comic packs related to the topics that we will be studying including biology and environmental science topics.

I will use the Manga and Cartoon guides as resources to scan and upload for the students to access and learn from as we are introducing new topics.

The books requested will consist of individual topic related informational comics that I will scan, and then upload online for my students to access.
