My Students

My first-grade class is located in a rural part of South Carolina. Seventy-five percent of my students are living at or below poverty level. Many have never been outside of our small community. They are struggling living at home, not going to school, and with a lack of socializing with the teacher and friends.

Remote learning has been hard for my students who are working on shared devices, no device at all, no internet at home, or who may be trying to learn using a parent's phone.

Students are trying to learn in a setting that has not been the major setting for learning. They miss the school life and they miss getting help with school work from me the teacher.

I worry about how students are doing, I call them frequently and keep up with the work they are completing online. I have about twenty-five percent of my students actively completing work on a regular basis. I want to just hug them and sit down and read a good book with my students.

My Project

Covid19 has changed the way I teach. I now think about ways to engage my students so they choose to continue learning. I want to minimize the burden on my parents and help them teach my students. In the last 50 days, I have learned how to use Google Meets, Screencastify, OSMO projector, as well as monitor lots of apps to engage my students. Not all of my videos are great, OK, some look pretty bad, but I spent a lot of time trying to present the material in such a manner the students and parents can understand it since asking questions is not always possible.

These materials I am asking for will enhance my videos, give me light, and supply resources that will make my lessons more engaging and meaningful for the kids.

I have been trying to make the videos look professional. I have made some outside to use better light only to realize the birds are really loud and you can hear the traffic. I have attended several online professional development courses in the last 50 days, and I am getting a handle on what I could do to help my students in the remote e-Learning setting. I have also kept in mind how these resources can still remain useful when we return to school. I want to make videos I can use to help struggling students later.
