My Project

I currently work as a Special Education teacher in an elementary school in a self-contained classroom for children with autism. My students range from 1st to 3rd grade. All of my students display a range of challenges that although are common to being on the Autism Spectrum, are truly unique to them. Each student struggles with limitations that include but are not limited to social and academic delays as well as communication and behavioral challenges.

Despite the challenges that my students have to live with and face every day, they work tremendously hard to overcome these limitations; the need for appropriate academic and organizational materials as well as items to keep everything clean and sanitary is imperative in a self-contained classroom.

With my students’ repetitive use of wearing learning items down in combination with physical behaviors that frequently occur, items in the classroom are often damaged or destroyed. Replacing items, keeping things organized and clean helps with the flow of learning.

Ensuring that students with autism make the gains and strides that are really required in order for them to truly be as independent as possible, there are an infinite amount of resources that could be utilized in order to assist in their learning and growth. The materials I am requesting will help ensure I am able to meet each of my student's Individual Educational Goals by specifically targeting exactly what they need. By acquiring these materials, I will be able to create various but specific learning centers around my classroom where each student can work individually, with another student, and with assistants to tackle specific skills.
