My Students

It's time for students to learn math and science through creating, experimenting, and playing!

I teach in a typical inner city school where by 6th grade many students still can't read, write, or solve basic math problems.

My incoming 6th grade students are curious and excited to learn but face these challenges. I have found that students are most excited to learn when they feel ownership of their learning experience. They are also excited to discover. Drilling facts has become the foundation for learning in many classrooms. I feel that students learn best when they are given opportunities to think critically and discover with the guidance of adults as well as other classmates. I have found that approaching learning through inquiry and making learning practical has helped struggling students make sense of basic math and science concepts. This approach has also engaged my most challenging students and minimized behavior issues.

My Project

With the addition of hands on manipulatives, resource guides, games, and a computer I will finally be able to dive deeper into lessons based on inquiry. My students will strengthen their relationships with peers while working in groups to solve problems or conduct experiments. Families will be encouraged to become more active parts of the school community through attending science fairs and quarterly portfolio exhibits of their child's work. More significantly, I am requesting these materials because many of my students are unable to comprehend the math and science textbooks I have been provided with. Although most of my students can read these books the books assume students have already developed critical thinking skills and therefore the books are much too complicated. I have used these books as a reference but spent my time putting together my own resources. The addition of these resources would provide me with a better foundation to build a curriculum that encourages inquiry. Through inquiry and project based learning students will be forced to develop their reading and math skills in a practical context.

Knowing the steps to a long division problem is important but understanding when we need to use this strategy is just as important.

Students need to start developing their problem solving skills so that they can think critically about the world around them throughout their daily life.
