My Project

I teach at a small alternative school on the seacoast of New Hampshire. We are a tight-knit bunch and like to have fun as we learn. We moved into a brand new-to-us spot this year and have much more space to move, grow, and learn. While we have been able to fill our new space with a lot of what we need, we cannot do it all on our own. There is a new teaching kitchen space that needs some tools for us to chef up some magic. These kids mean the world to us and we want to give them the best.

At our school, we cook a lot.

We work cooking into several of our classes. My students make food at the end of several different geography units to taste the areas we just learned about. I have taught a gender, food, and culture class where we have read about several different people, places, and times and then cooked some of the foods we read about. In my world religions class, we have discussed different religions and their specific holidays and then made food related to those celebrations. Our other teachers have used food in lots of different ways. Our science teacher has a handful of classes that use food to teach science concepts. Our math and science teachers have a huge unit on maple syrup where they work with all the third-grade students in the city to identify and tap maple trees and then collect and boil the sap in our own sugar shack. That unit always involves lots of cooking of maple-related products. With our students, food is a conduit to learning about lots of other topics. With our new teaching kitchen, the possibilities of where we can go and endless...with your help of course!
