Teaching Kids With Autism

My students with autism need hands-on materials to stimulate interest in learning. Some have motor skills deficits and need adapted scissors, crayons, and furniture. Others have sensory needs and would benefit from the tunnel and gel boards. All are learning to read and would benefit from the rhyming puzzles and ladybug letters.

Autism is on the rise and the learning in my classroom will rise too if you help! I teach a Kinder - 2nd grade class of children with autism. My school is in a low socio-economic community in a large urban school district experiencing a sever budget crisis.

Students come to my classroom not knowing how to sit still for a lesson, cut, or color. The district supplies are not adapted to their lack of skill.

Some of my students do not know how to stay seated...thus they need a special chair. Most cannot focus long enough to hear a story, so they need hands-on activities such as puzzles to engage them in reading and letter recognition. Help me to hook them on learning and give them the skills they need to begin.

You can help these amazing kids unlock their potential! I have had students come in not talking and go to the next grade speaking in sentences. I have had kindergarteners reading sentences and a first grader counting to 500...and these are moderately disabled children! By giving them the tools they need to access learning, they can make great strides. Please help.
