This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
I work at a school in DC that serves students with severe and profound intellectual and medical disabilities. Many of my students use wheelchairs to get around, are on supplemental oxygen, have had tracheostomies--overall, they have faced more in their young lives than most adults.
My students are nonspeaking; they require assistive technology to communicate.
The BigMacks will be used for some of our earliest communicators. When they press the button, they will be able to communicate a thought and participate in a lesson. The 4-Choice communicator will be used for a student who is a little more advanced than his peers, and who needs to be able to communicate more than one thing at a time. Finally, these devices are all battery-powered, so the batteries will be used to ensure the students have continued access to their voices!
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
