This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know what it is like to be 10 and read IN A TEXTBOOK the history of America? It is a pain! My students need more non-fiction history books to build their prior knowledge and help make discussing history fun and exciting.

I teach at a charter school in a low, socially economic disadvantaged side of town.

The great news is that I have kids who love America and her history. These students want more information than I can currently provide to them other then the textbook and YouTube videos. I believe that I see a lot of my students who could use the history of our country to shape her future in a positive way. It is heart breaking to be asked for books that I cannot personally afford for them. This set of non-fiction books will provide students with information that is beneficial to all in the long run. They will be well informed citizens, with knowledge of America's history and what makes America the great country it is today!

My Project

5th grade is a time where we ween children off fiction, story-telling and the happily ever afters. I think History is story telling. What better story for our kids to know then the story of America, and how she became the land of opportunity. This is a great way to ensure that our future citizens care about voting, legislation and how America's past can keep us from making future mistakes.

I like the quote that states, "You can't know where you are going if you don't know where you've been." I think it is important to immerse our 4th and 5th grade students with America's history so that they understand what our nation has been through and what ideals we fight to protect.
