My Students

This year my district is starting the school year off with distance learning! I teach at a low-income urban school and most of my students are performing below grade-level. Despite this, I am up for the challenge of this new platform and so far we are all thriving!

My students are doing very well with virtual learning, they're trying very hard to learn to navigate the digital world!

They love being competitive at the end of each lesson - they're also great at utilizing teamwork and positive talk when participating in class!

Regardless of the challenges, my class is full of smiles and laughs! Now we just need some supplies to keep them having fun while they learn!

My Project

Being in a virtual classroom setting has made it difficult to give cheap and incentivizing tools and prizes for students. We have been doing weekly "student of the week" and I am using Canva for incentives. My special education co-teacher (who I share with another teacher) and I have tried giving them food via DoorDash, but it quickly gets too expensive for weekly gifts. Instead, we thought monthly prizes would be of benefit.

My students have been working hard on a growth mindset through children's books, prizes for them to work towards would help boost mindset and feelings of equity and offer them a greater incentive to work towards the goals we have set around PBIS and growth mindset.

We have a charting system in class now, but I hope that by offering these amazing prizes, that they will take it more seriously. We are also starting a virtual compliment/praise "jar" that we will be reading at the end of the week each week. My class still struggles with negative self-talk. Since many of them are students with disabilities, they already think low of themselves. They've come a long way from where they were at the start of the year, but have much progress left to make.

As a white female teacher, I try my best to boost feelings of acceptance and self-worth in my classroom, but this book on equity would be very helpful. Our class consists of many who receive services and were already behind academically before the COVID setback - physical incentives would be a tremendous benefit. These items are commonly found in households of children their age in other cities, so they would in a way also promote equity to technology.
