This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Writing workshop is our favorite time of the day. It is a time when the students can express themselves through the written word, using their own voice. "There is no greater gift a writing teacher can give than to help another person know he or she has a story to tell.'' - Lucy Caulkins

My students live in a very low economic area, within the City of New York.

Their parents are immigrants who come to the US for work. They live in one bedroom apartments, with extended family, many to a bed. They cannot play outdoors, because it is unsafe to be on the street. Despite their undesirable living circumstances, these children come to school with smiles. They love to learn. They love the friendship of their peers, and they love to have a place where they feel safe.

My Project

My students will learn the joy of writing. They will learn to be comfortable expressing their inner thoughts. We will sit on the class rug and share our ideas. Sharing thoughts and discussing details, encourages the students to be passionate about their ideas. Having an easel to hold paper, I can model the proper writing conventions.

By having an easel to hold my paper tablet, I will be able to create charts to hang in the room for children's reference.

I will be able to model proper writing strategies. I will be able to use the easel to hold a "big book" while teaching reading strategies. By teaching the students reading and writing strategies, while also sharing the passion for learning, my students will be able to be successful learners.
