My Students

I teach 99- 9th grade students. I work in a small, rural, farming town with a population of around 4,000.

While students in my district are bright, wonderful individuals, the population lacks diversity.

Many students are unaware of life or opinions outside of our small, farming town.

Over 94% of the population is Caucasian. We have a small percentage of ELL students, mainly of Hispanic heritage and only a few African American students as well.

The main differentiating factor in the high school is socioeconomic status. Fifty percent of my students receive free or reduced lunch and only 68% of students continue education past high school.

My Project

These novels will expose my students to different cultures, experiences, and viewpoints. This is incredibly important because the community we live in doesn’t lend itself to many diverse experiences, individuals, or opinions.

Literature is the most effective way to open their eyes to the cultures and diversity of the world.

Both of these books are on the top of the list for Young Adult Literature. Both novels are raw, beautifully crafted, and captivating from the start. They easily hook teenagers in and teach them important lessons without them realizing it because they enjoy the books so much!

My goal with these novels is to add them to a set of already purchased books for literature circles (I Am Malala and Night). Each group will read a diverse novel with a focus on a different culture, and then create a project-based presentation to their classmates so they are actually learning about four different cultures and the struggles they face!

Through self-determined questions and student-led discussions, students eyes will be opened to cultures they’d never experience otherwise.
