Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Project

In my classroom, I use art to teach visual literacy, thinking, and communication skills. How do I do that? Using a facilitation method called Visual Thinking Strategies, I challenge students to look at art and discuss what's going on in a picture, provide evidence to support their ideas, and relate what they see to their everyday lives.

"Art is the essential first discussion topic because it enables students to use existing visual and cognitive skills to develop confidence and experience, learning to use what they already know to figure out what they don't; they are then prepared to explore other complex subject matter alone and with peers."

But how do I make sure that my less engaged, shy, or non-English speaking students are able to participate? By encouraging students to put pencil to paper to share their ideas. I'm asking for your support to provide my first-grade students with sketchbooks and charcoal/graphite supplies to use throughout the upcoming school year. Their sketches, inspired by the artists we're studying, will complement the rich conversations we're having in the classroom.
