My Students

Help my first graders become more effective and independent in handling conflicts! These books will help us to learn to get along without resorting to name-calling and bullying, and give us more time to focus on learning!

I am a first grade special education teacher in New York.

The majority of my 22 students come from low-income backgrounds, and do not have access to many educational opportunities outside of school. My students' favorite part of the day is story time. They love to read and really respond well to the books we share in the classroom. I've found that using a story to introduce a topic or a classroom value is the best way to get them engaged. As first graders, my students are still learning how to get along with one another, and how to resolve disputes without fighting or name-calling. These books will enable us to create a comprehensive conflict-resolution curriculum that will provide my students with positive examples of how to resolve conflicts both inside and outside the classroom. This is an essential life skill that all young children need to learn.

My Project

These books will help my students improve their social skills as they improve their reading and language arts skills. Children's literature is an ideal vehicle for teaching conflict resolution and other social skills because it can be used to introduce and model conflict-resolution skills, develop understanding about conflict and create a classroom culture of tolerance. These books will be used as part of a conflict resolution program called Teaching Conflict Resolution Through Children's Literature. Each day, the children will read a story about one aspect of conflict resolution. Next, we will discuss the lesson learned from the story and complete an interactive activity practicing the skill. Each of these books provides an important lesson about getting along with others, tolerating differences, and reaching compromises without violence. With the help of these books, my students will not only improve their reading skills, they will also learn how to interact positively with peers.

Every child deserves to be a part of a classroom that is free from bullying, teasing, and name-calling.

In order for this to happen, all children need to be taught how to interact positively with their peers and how to appropriately resolve conflicts. With these resources, my students will be able to have a conflict-free classroom where each child feels safe and valued.
