I sponsor the 5th grade Ambassadors' Club at my school. One of the goals of our club is to teach our Ambassadors compassion towards others. We want to celebrate Veterans on Veterans' Day by providing a breakfast and program to honor them.
We are requesting thank you cards, decorations and a pen/keychain gift to teach our students compassion and gratitude to Veterans in our community.
It is important to teach the students about compassion and appreciation to all Veterans. We will first define compassion at our monthly meeting. We will teach that compassion is the feeling that arises when you are confronted with another's suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering. The students will come to understand the sacrifice and suffering that the Veterans had to endure to protect our country. The students will watch clips of Veterans in war to understand their plight and why we need to show compassion and honor Veterans in our community. The Ambassador students will then show their compassion by writing heart-felt thank you letters to the Veterans. We will be able to measure that the students understand compassion through these letters. Along with the letters, the students will also serve the Veterans breakfast and will have meaningful conversations that the teachers will monitor to make sure the students understand the meaning of compassion towards others. The goal of this project is to instill compassion in students so they understand the why we need to honor the brave men and women who served to protect our country and freedom by showing and understanding compassion for them.
