My Project

Students with visual impairments have unique challenges with accessing materials on the internet, so they use special programs called screen readers to make visual information accessible to them. Which programs are available to the student depends on which type of computer they use. I have requested an Apple MacBook laptop so my students can learn the VoiceOver screen reader program at school.

Many visually impaired students and their families have iPhones, Apple Watches, and Apple computers at home; however, most screen reader instruction at school uses only Microsoft-based screen readers —preventing blind students from taking advantage of the Apple ecosystem their family naturally uses.

In these cases, blind students cannot apply what we are teaching them to their home computers, and their families are unfamiliar with the tools they are using at school. This is further complicated if my students want to go into STEM or music, which heavily rely on programs developed for Apple computers.

I want to help empower visually impaired/blind students to be able to access their computer at home and use it to their maximum potential by practicing at school with this MacBook laptop.
