My Students

Despite challenges with virtual learning, my students are coming to class ready to learn and are eager to try new things! However, our school is a Title I inner-city school, and most of our students are relying on me to show them how to navigate this new learning environment. While I am excited about being able to teach my students, I am nervous about the new challenges we are facing with distance learning and how it will affect them going forward. We are 100% virtual for the foreseeable future, and that is something no one was planning on. I am currently teaching from home, so I invite 64 students into my makeshift classroom 4 days a week for 90 minutes at a time. An average of 90% of my students show up to class, so I feel immense pressure to make online learning engaging, so they continue to come to class. Even though our school schedule mirrors a typical middle school day, this year is anything but typical. Just like my students, I am learning as I go. We are helping each other with technology, and they are giving me daily feedback on what methods are working.

My Project

In July, the decision was made to start the year virtual. In October, the decision was made to continue with virtual learning until our community numbers were in the low to lowest range for 14 consecutive days. Once this criteria was reached, there would be 5 phases, with 3 weeks between each phase, as children slowly returned to an in person hybrid schedule. My students and I are in phase four. Therefore, if we are ever able to transition to a face to face hybrid model, it will be nine weeks before we get back in the building, assuming community numbers don't spike during this process. My students and I hope to one day to be back in the classroom but realize it won't be any time soon. Since we will return using a hybrid model, I will always be teaching half the class on zoom while the other half is in person. Even returning to school doesn't eliminate virtual learning.

I consider myself a dedicated teacher and have definitely pushed myself to learn new technology and new ways of teaching concepts to help make learning accessible to my students.

Planning for this new way of teaching and recreating lessons has taken many hours outside of school to complete. However, I know if my lessons and activities aren't engaging and accessible to the virtual learner, then they won't be be successful with the content, and I would have failed them. With this project I hope to have access to the many digital lessons and activities teachers have already created. Activities that will engage my students and keep them motivated. Activities and lessons that will help inspire me to create my own virtual library. Being able to access lessons and activities already created will free up my time to help struggling learners.
