Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have been teaching for sixteen years, and yet still feel as fresh and hopeful about my work as the day I began. At scant moments when my resolve falters, within seconds a flood of images, sounds, and smiles spills forth to remind me of just how privileged I am to do this work, and to be part of a school community where teachers are encouraged to learn, share and grow their practice.

This work--at moments both big and small--is all about the kids, and about being prepared to respond to their social, emotional, and academic needs.

As such, as my colleagues and I move about in the world, we are always thinking of the work and the kids--they are so curious, and so ready to demystify what can seem oblique and impenetrable. In our classrooms, my colleagues and I strive to make content and concepts as dynamic and real-world friendly as possible. We love what we do, and the only real downside is there is never enough time in the short, short year to get it all in.

My Project

In every classroom at our school, hard-working teachers are doing such meaningful and dynamic work with kids. To keep our community strong, growing, and inspired, we regularly engage in professional learning groups. This year, due to budget cuts, we are calling upon the DonorsChoose community to help facilitate this work, and to ensure that we are fully equipped to meet our kiddos in full, and help them become the best they can be.

The two texts I'm requesting, "Teasing, Tattling and Defiance" and "Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain," are two of the most impactful books on the market today.

"Teasing, Tattling, and the Brain" explains how to address behaviors before they begin through shared routines, considerate language, and community practices, while "Culturally Responsive Teaching and the Brain" takes certain pedagogical trends such as mindfulness and the neuroscience, and adds a crucial anti-racist dimension. We are so excited to engage with these books, share dialogue and put these vital ideas into practice!

As every literacy teacher can attest, kids do some of their best learning in book clubs. Well, guess what? Teachers are no different. We thank you advance for your support for our learning, and for the ripple effect these books will have for many years to come.
