This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am requesting gift cards for the Teachers Pay Teachers website. In our school district, like most, students are placed in a grade level based on their age, not their abilities. The curriculum I am given is for students who are close to a third-grade level or above. However, in my classroom, I often get students who are 2 or 3 levels below where they should be according to their age. Some of these students are new to the US and some have been falling through the cracks because most teachers teach to their grade level and not to what their students need. Many of these students are not traditional learners and need help figuring out how to learn.

I use the resources created by other teachers when I realize that my students are missing key skills that they should have seen in prior grades.

I believe that it is my purpose in life to help students achieve as much as they can in my class regardless of their abilities. I do my best to support students in acquiring the skill that they need to understand the third-grade curriculum. I also try to anticipate the skills and knowledge that they will need to succeed in future grades and life.

I do my best to help students become independent learners that can help themselves to continue their education and to learn how to ask for support. I need to empower students in my class so that, even if they do not get a teacher who knows how to help them next year, they can find ways to succeed. I often purchase materials that provided explicit practice using visual aids and games. I also find materials so that I can differentiate homework or classwork while still teaching the same curriculum.
