I work with 5-7 year old children with autism. My students are non-verbal and have few ways to communicate. Without appropriate communication, students exhibit maladaptive non-verbal behavior. Tantrums, hitting themselves, and hitting others are some of these behaviors. If my students had an appropriate way to communicate, these behaviors would loose their function and eventually disappear. Children with autism understand pictures and concrete objects more than spoken language. PECS is picture exchange communication system. Students use symbols to express their needs and wants. It is very hard for me to create these picture symbols. Using Mayer Johnson's Boardmaker I could have these symbols made in an instant in my classroom. In addition, there are many book adaptations and activities available for download if I had the most up to date version of Boardmaker. These aids would be helpful and interesting to my students. Please help my students learn to communicate. Thank you.
