Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our children are dreamers. They are eager and motivated to learn. They come from families who are hard-working, and they are teaching their children that same motivation for learning. Many of our families fall below the national poverty levels; some experiencing the situation of being homeless or are home insecure. In addition, English is a second language for the majority of our families or they are bilingual households.
Every child deserves a great start.
Our children deserve no less than great. Our children are getting ready for Kindergarten, and it is our job to prepare them! Having the right materials and devices is a large part of preparing students for school success!
My Project
For various reasons my students and their families could greatly benefit from more knowledge on dental health. I want to teach my students and their families how to care for their baby teeth and the importance of brushing, flossing, eating healthy foods and visiting the dentist so that their adult teeth will be strong and healthy.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that tooth decay affects more than 25% of US children ages two and five years (Colgate, n.d.).
I can tell you that this number is a lot higher in my school’s community; we have a mobile dentist that visits children each year while they are at school. In order to best help my students I want to set up a science center where children can practice brushing and flossing and can hear books read on keeping our teeth healthy. I also want this center to facilitate conversations with parents about visiting the dentist and the importance of brushing and flossing each day. I want to fight tooth decay through education and play!
