This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Full implementation of the Common Core State Standards this year has been a challenging undertaking. My students have tried to keep up with the new demands that are being placed on them. Yet, many of my students struggle with the language, the reading, and of course, the critical thinking aspect.

I have been a teacher for 20 years.

I currently teach fourth grade. However, I have taught other grade levels from prekindergarten to fifth grade. I have been with the same large, urban school district my entire teaching career. Most, if not all, of my experience has been working with English language learners in low socioeconomic communities. When they enter my class, many of my students are performing below grade level. The challenge each year is to address their needs and help them improve their skill levels in all academic areas. The reward each year is witnessing their growth academically as well as socially.

My Project

As a teacher, I am also a life-long learner. I am requesting an Apple iPad 2 to improve my teaching skills in literacy, writing, and math. This technology will enable me to access online courses provided by my district, webinars on implementing the Common Core State Standards, educational videos provided by organizations such as the Teaching Channel, rigorous, standards-based math lessons and resources, and professional readings and articles on best teaching practices and strategies. I will also be able to access Nancy Fetzer’s Grade 4-6 Writing Curriculum Online Training Manual and Videos to learn best teaching strategies and techniques to guide my students in mastering the Common Core Writing Standards. Having access to these online resources will enable me to use new teaching methods and techniques to engage my students.
