My Students

Remember the excitement you felt when you saw your work displayed in class? Do you remember how a classroom lights up when it is bright and colorful with students work? The students need basic art supplies to help display what they have learned as well as to help brighten up the classroom.

My students are middle school aged in a poor area of downstate in New York.

My school is very big, roughly 2,000 students. Many of the students can get lost in the shuffle if they do not have a chance to shine. Many of the students are well behaved and are good academically, but the lack of funds from both the school and families makes things difficult.

My Project

These supplies will be used mainly for middle school health classes. Specifically to help reinforce many of the health issues brought up in class. This will include aspects such as, fitness and nutrition, HIV Aids, Bullying, Positive Self-image and Hygiene. These are very important but sometimes overlooked units in a typical middle school education. The art supplies will help reinforce the main ideas of these issues, while also spreading the message to other students. These projects will also help drastically alter the appearance of sometimes bleak and meager looking classrooms and hallways.

These are such important supplies because they will not only give the students a chance to get away from the typical book work, but studies have shown that when students are taught topics in multiple ways, they are more likely to retain the information.

Likewise, studies have shown that a classroom that is bright, colorful and filled with students work is more conducive to student learning.
