Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am so fortunate to teach a wonderful group of first-grade students. My students are kind, hard-working, curious, and resilient.

I teach at a Title One school in Spanish Harlem with students of diverse needs and backgrounds.

My students are learning phonics, reading, writing, math, social studies, science, as well as a social-emotional curriculum.

My Project

The best way for students to build confidence in their ability to read is to be able to read books where they are able to figure out each word. Decodable readers are books that students can read and use the concepts they have learned in phonics to figure out each unknown word. The books build on each other and allow for students to develop confidence in their learning.

Giving students books where they can take what they have learned and apply it, allows every student to be successful.

Regardless of learning disabilities, decodable texts meet the child where they are. These books are great for students who are in the early stages of reading. They can be used in the classroom and to take home. Parents have great success with decodables because they are books where their children can sound out each word.
