Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Validation. It is something we long for from kindergarten to adulthood. If there is any time in life when it is needed above any other I believe it is in the teenage years. I feel it is my job to validate not only who my students are but the dreams they do not feel they have the right to hope for. I teach English to high school juniors in a small farming community in Texas. Around eighty percent of my kids are minorities and they have difficulty relating to the characters in "classic" literature. They cannot relate to the stories of success because they say, "white kids are always successful ‘cuz they have the easy road." I have learned that for my students to be engaged and active in their own learning I have to go into their world. I have chosen contemporary novels in order to meet them where they are. These characters are people they can identify with and understand. Understanding is the cornerstone of learning. I want my students to realize that their place in the world and what they contribute to it is not decided upon birth but rather by the desire they have for success. I want my students to read about other teenagers who, under overwhelming odds, made their dreams a reality. I believe these books will open their eyes to a world that I do not think they believe exists - a world with opportunities not confined by class. The school library does not have the funds to buy multiple copies of books. I need about fifteen books of each title so that each student may have their own copy to read. We will be doing character studies and comparing the lives of the teenage characters with their own. It will give them a chance to see that anything is possible no matter what your background or what circumstances you may have to overcome. The best way to teach a child is through modeling. No matter how many times I may tell them that they can make it, I am still someone who "had it easy." You have the chance to show them people who they perceive to be like them; people who rose above their circumstances and made their life better because they persevered and did not let the biases they faced box them into a future they did not choose.
