My Students

The students in my Transitional-First grade classroom are seven of the most inquisitive, outgoing, determined, energetic, and hilarious kiddos that I know.

Unfortunately, from the moment they step in my classroom door, they are already performing behind their more affluent peers. Many of my students are from households where English is a Second Language and find themselves navigating a somewhat challenging language barrier. Inside the four walls of my classroom, my students are becoming voracious readers, gobbling up books and growing their brains. In just ten short months, I watch them go from having difficulty identifying letters and sounds to becoming independent readers.

My Project

On a daily basis, I get to witness and revel in the love of reading that is bursting out of my classroom. Unfortunately, this isn't something that my students' parents get to see as often. I am requesting a variety of storytelling kits and their companion books for my students. Through this project, I can create bilingual storytelling kits for my students to take home and enjoy with their families. These kits will have cloth characters and props from one of our favorite classroom books, along with the companion book in both English and Spanish.

Studies have shown that reading success begins with families who read together.

By providing books and activities in two languages, even my most struggling ELL kiddo can soar to great heights!
