My Students

I teach at an impacted urban high school with 4,400 students. Nearly all of our students are designated low socioeconomic status with a large population of English language learners. Despite our population, our high school believes that every student can achieve and strives to push them forward to a secondary educational option.

The students who take my classes are generally reading and writing at lower than grade level.

They need resources to help them close the achievement gap and succeed.

My Project

Our students are super excited about bringing their own creations to life, but they lack the resources at home. Two sewing machines will allow students to learn sewing skills that they otherwise would be shut out of. Our goal is to teach them the basics of patterning and sewing so that they can make costumes for the various Cosplay events they attend during the year.

Many of our students are considering careers in design or technology and learning to sew will open new pathways for their future.

Whether or not they choose college, trade school or another post secondary option, the ability to sew gives students a sense of accomplishment and self sufficiency that is difficult to foster in this consumer age.

Help bring their creations to life and show them that their imagination truly is limitless.
