This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

T=BK2 (Technology Equals Bilingual Kids Too) Help my fifth grade limited English speaking students develop the oral and written skills they need to become successful and productive citizens. You can give them tools to inspire their creativity and shed the fear to express themselves in English.

I teach fifty-two students who are transitioning from the bilingual classroom into English.

Fifth grade bilingual students will have to test in English for the first time in their academic careers as they transition from their native language in all English classes. Over 90% of our bilingual fourth grade students meet or exceed state standards on the Spanish writing, reading and math STAAR tests of Texas. These same students who are successful in their native language struggle in fifth grade to pass math, reading and science STAAR tests. I believe that the T=BK project would be a great way to immerse my students into academic English while having fun learning about science. About Ten of the students are advanced in their writing, speaking and reading of English. The remaining students are at at an intermediate or beginning level. All of these students are at risk because they have not developed the English skills they need to continue growing academically.

My Project

The students will use the camera to photograph their projects so they can use the images in Power Point or Prezi presentations that will help develop their written communication skills. Students will also use the video mode of the camera to record skits were they explain their newly acquired science knowledge to students in the lower grades. The printer will be used by students to scan their original artwork, diagrams, graphs into a digital format so they can include it in their digital presentations and in print products such as brochures, stories and reports. Students will be able to print their products and share them with their peers, the school and their parents.

The donation will give students a jump start in science and the English language.

It will spark students to be creative and communicate their ideas. Fifth graders will become leaders, sharing their science knowledge with lower grades, their parents and the community. Equipment purchased will allow current and future students to have access to technology and materials currently limited at our school. It will enrich the lives of all our students, their parents, the community and our school
