Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a high-poverty area in Virginia. My school is small, with about 350 children enrolled. The children in my building are great kids; they thrive off positive motivation and are very intuitive. We were named a National Blue Ribbon School in 2006.

Currently, I am a second grade teacher.

I love teaching second grade simply because kids are fun to teach at this level. They are enthusiastic, happy to be at school, work together well, and they are the perfect mixture of independence and neediness in behavior and attitude!

They make me WANT to come to work.

My Project

While meditating this summer, I realized that my classroom setup needed to evolve so that kids feel even MORE comfortable being who they are - busybodied, active beings.

I cannot sit in hard, plastic chairs for 6-7 hours all day, so I don't expect my kids to do so.

I allow them to sit on their knees, sit on the floor with clipboards, or stand up behind their chairs when completing work individually or in groups; however, I wanted to figure out how else to assist my kids move in an organized way while completing their work...so I asked them!

I asked, 'what would be your dream classroom?' 'How would you like your learning areas to look?' 'When we go outside, what fresh materials would you like to play with?' My kids told me, 'chairs that do not break or tip over easily when they bend over or bounce their legs; seats that are 'cute' (I think they meant "colorful"); and jump ropes and full-blown balls to use when they go outside. I believe wobble stools, bouncy balls, and new ropes, soccer/kick/foam footballs will satisfy their requests.

Recess is important in the social development of children. It is the time where they can be who they are FREELY, with no boundaries (besides safety ones).

My kids would like new jump ropes and bouncy balls so that they can "do more stuff" while outside! They wanted me to tell you, the reader, that they ARE LEARNING while on the playground, because they are singing counting games while jumping rope and when they have to remind each other of the rules of freeze tag.

Did you get that?

With new seating and recess items, I will not have to say, "Keep still in that chair!" because that's their purpose-to stay MOVING.
