This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are new to the school experience and come bringing all the energy and curiosity you could hope for in young scholars. They live in a vibrant city yet too often the enriching experiences that could spark their interests and motivate further exploration and study are denied to them because of socioeconomic factors beyond their control. They are attending school in a neighborhood of East LA. The students are remarkably independent, love to take charge and feel responsibility. We believe they deserve a world-class education and an inspiring environment in which to do their great learning. At KIPP Promesa Prep we are determined to provide that. Whatever it takes! My Project

The most effective instruction children receive happens in small-groups or one-on-one. In these settings students get tailored coaching that more precisely meets their needs. Students are motivated by work that is perfectly challenging.

In our founding year of first grade, I am hoping to secure a table top easel for my class and the three other first grade classrooms at our school.

In previous classrooms I found this to be an invaluable resource to our student groups. These easels allow us to highlight a word feature or word family. Or during guided reading we might study an especially challenging word and as a group apply various decoding strategies. I have also used the easel in small-group math instruction to represent student's mathematical thinking. It allows us as teachers to provide a quick visual to support thinking and problem-solving.

Because we are a new school and this is our first first-grade class, these easels will add value to our small-group work and will last for many first graders yet to come!
