Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are fortunate to have an interactive whiteboard in our classroom. Our problem is that we were given outdated computers to use with this amazing technology. When we are in the middle of a video clip, or any activity, the programs freeze or stop running. Help us access our technology efficiently!

I teach first grade to a group of 24 enthusiastic students.

The majority of my students are English Language Learners attending a Title I school. My two sisters and I are teaching at the elementary school we attended as children. This is my 18th year teaching at this school and I am well connected with the families I work with. I am currently teaching siblings of former students, children of former students and incredibly, a grandchild of former classmates. Many of our students are very experienced with technology, most of them through video consoles. We are always encouraging our families to access the Internet for learning purposes. Many families have limited access to computers. We have an amazing computer lab at our site which my partner teacher and I open for our parents every Monday. With the move towards integrated technology in schools, this experience is so important for the parents. Technology in 2012, we have the potential, we need the resources to continue learning.

My Project

For those of you who have never observed an interactive whiteboard in the classroom, you would be amazed at the level of engagement and excitement shown by the students. When we first started using the programs I went through several trainings offered on-site, through the district, and through the office of education. As I was becoming more and more familiar with everything offered through this technology, my PC started to get bogged down and slow down. We are still able to access information, but at a very slow pace. The programs often work very slowly or freeze on us. I believe that with a new PC and with upgraded programs we will be able to access more learning video clips related to our topic of study and use hands on programs where students can physically manipulate the information being taught.

In order for our students to be successful in school, updated technology must be accessible to them.

Integration of technology in everyday learning is not the future, it is now. Help us to keep current in technology and to access learning on a very different level.
