Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students sing, dance, and put on plays, but approach reading with apprehension. Those in Special Ed. and ELLs lag behind their peers in reading; they are averse to taking reading tests and get blamed for the school's overall poor performance. Yet, they love being read to and sharing stories.

I teach in a small inner city arts MS/HS school that serves approximately 530 students in grades 6-12.

More than 20% of the student body has a special education designation. Similar to the community in which it is located, the ethnic breakdown of the school is 69.3% Hispanic/Latino, followed by 26.93% Black or African-American. As a special education teacher, I co-teach English in grades 8, 9, 10, and 11. My students are extremely talented and have chosen this school for the arts curriculum; they can sing, dance, and act; they design all the scenery and stage sets; and they perform their hearts out when they put on plays. However, they have yet to discover the connection between reading and the arts, or the connection between writing and reading.

My Project

This fall, in an effort to increase their engagement with reading, I will explore a reading strategy that involves the concept of reading partners. My 9th grade students will use dialogue journal entries to write and exchange their thoughts, reactions, and responses to books with older students on a weekly basis. Students in upper grades will serve as reading partners and as mentors who will respond to the journal entries. My goal is for students to motivate each other to improve their reading levels, and to become more passionate about reading.

For this project, I am requesting support in terms of basic materials, such as quality writing journals and pens - students are always asking for pens and paper, it seems.

I would like my students to experience what it feels like to write with high quality implements in personal diaries. I want them to experience purposeful writing that is special, a personal exchange, treated with thoughtfulness and care. I want them to know that their words are worth putting on paper and worth sharing.
