My Students

I am a speech-language pathologist in rural Oklahoma serving a culturally diverse population of students. My sweet kids have more difficulties with communication than their peers and many of them come from broken or disadvantaged homes. Most of my students struggle with more than one disability including autism, emotional struggles, academic deficits, visual and hearing impairments.

My kids come to school excited and ready to learn!

They love to smile, laugh and have fun. Through fun engaging activities, we are building strong relationships that will encourage a safe haven environment needed for learning.

When true learning takes place, it's so exciting to watch these little ones catch on to new concepts. We may have worked on a skill for months and when it finally clicks then everyone in the room cheers and sometimes we shed happy tears!

My Project

We use narrative or story telling skills in everyday conversation and in classroom academic areas like reading and writing. Whether we are describing what we had for lunch, a birthday party we went to, or some crazy experience we had, we use sequencing and narration skills so it makes sense to someone else.

Have you ever listened to someone try to tell you about something exciting that happened to them, but their story was a jumbled mess?

Students that struggle with language skills have a difficult time relating events and stories to others.

My students have a difficult time relaying the simplest events to others. These materials will help teach them them different aspects of narrating an event. The story sequencing cards will help my students learn how to sequence events. The sentence building materials will help them organize words into meaningful sentences. Finally, the story telling activities will help with the end goal of telling stories or narratives in an organized manner. This skill will promote their communication with others by not only increasing their social skills, but also by bolstering success with school academics.
