This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

When asked what music means to them, a student told me that "music makes me feel happy. It changed me because before I didn't have anything to express my feelings and now I do." This is my hope for every student in my class. My biggest challenge is providing everything they need to learn. I am so blessed to be able to work with such wonderful students!

They have a hunger for music that is insatiable!

Each day, I am able to go to work and be inspired by the dedication and hard work my students put into everything they do. Our school has made it their mission to build a culture that embraces musical learning and give every student the opportunity to participate in music and the arts. Our school is in a low-income area, and we do our best to provide as much of the needed supplies as possible, but our music program just keeps growing and we are struggling to keep up.

My Project

During the beginning of the pandemic, my younger music students were taught exclusively through asynchronous videos. One of the things that became part of my music lessons was Book Time. We always picked a book that was based off a song or related somehow to what we were learning in music. Now that I am seeing students in person again, I would love to continue that tradition of including books in our music lessons.

Many of the books on this list have music activities that are developed to raise literacy skills while also teaching music skills.

We need more books so that we can continue to expand our students' knowledge, creativity, and imagination!
