My Project

My fourth graders are amazing humans! They are intelligent, curious, and eager to learn. I teach in an urban school with students from a wide range of backgrounds, but they have one HUGE thing in common - they LOVE to read! One genre that many students want to explore more thoroughly is historical fiction. My students have matured and grown as readers, and they are ready to take on small-group book clubs!

From the yellow fever plague of the late 1700s to the events of September 11th, age-appropriate historical fiction helps young people explore the past.

This project will provide my fourth graders with five chapter books for self-selected book clubs. I hope to explore some familiar points in history, such as World War II and September 11th, using books including The War that Saved My Life and Eleven. My students have less background in the Great Depression, and can learn about his devastating period through Bud, Not Buddy. We will make connections to the trials of a pandemic through Fever 1793, and see a diverse telling of westward expansion in Prairie Lotus.
