My students love to read! During third grade, students are expected to read and retell myths from diverse cultures. I recently introduced my students to Greek myths, and they are fascinated by them.
Our school's library has a limited selection of Greek myths for my students to explore.
As a Title I school, we do not have funds available to purchase the books ourselves. My students and I have discovered that Mary Pope Osborne, one of our favorite authors, wrote a series of six stories that have been combined into a two-part collection called "Tales from the Odyssey." My students are eager to read this collection in order to better understand Greek mythology.
My Project
Homer's Odyssey is one of the classics. Mary Pope Osborne's books, "Tales from the Odyssey," are an age-appropriate retelling of this classic Greek text.
With this two-part book collection, I will be able to introduce my students to brave Odysseus and his long, courageous adventure to return home to his family.
The first book compilation includes stories of the One-Eyed Giant, The Land of the Dead, and Sirens and Sea Monsters. The second book compilation includes the stories of the Gray-Eyed Goddess, the Return to Ithaca, and The Final Battle.
With 12 copies of each book, every student will be able to read along rather than simply listening to a group read aloud. Together, we will study the text, learn new vocabulary and analyze character traits. We will also answer comprehension questions to compare and contrast the setting and plot of each tale.
I have also requested an audio CD recording of the text to use for students with special learning accommodations.
Thank you so much for supporting the learning of my students. Your donation is much appreciated!
