My Students

I teach talent development groups and engage individual classrooms in creativity lessons at a Title 1 school where 82% of our students are economically disadvantaged. Our school is also one of the schools in our district's Transformation Zone, which are "...schools that may need more support as they strive to ensure that students are prepared and poised for 100 percent success during their education journey." Additionally, our school has an Arts Conservatory and instructs students in the mediums of art, music and dance.

My students are artists, engineers, problem solvers and future leaders who value opportunities to creatively collaborate in solving real-world problems.

Talent Development provides them an opportunity for enrichment and to do just that. My students, through test scores and teacher observations, have demonstrated a unique need for programming that goes beyond the general education curriculum.

My Project

Our Talent Development lessons all center around an engaging book - some of our favorites include "Whoosh!: Lonnie Johnson's Super-Soaking Stream of Inventions" and "After the Fall (How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again)." A STEM project is tied to the literature and through questioning and exploration, students must develop a solution. Their solution is then further developed into a physical prototype primarily though the use of recycled materials. Using these materials is great for students to be able to explore and see items in new light, however, can present a challenge as they can be difficult to manipulate without the right tools.

Special cardboard cutters and scissors will allow students to devote more effort to their ideas and less to the task of cutting through thick cardboard, thus giving them back time to create.

Our focus is on their thinking and the opportunity to create and problem solve but sometimes the focus can be on the materials if students don't have the dexterity, strength or right tools to bring their ideas to life. This project aims to change that by giving students proper materials for engaging in the Talent Development curriculum and creative problem solving process. The measuring tools will provide exposure and practice to the variety of measuring tools that professionals use, beyond the ruler. The dice and marbles will be materials to be used time and again in various projects.
