Taking the Code Off-Screen to Create Amazing Innovations

My Project

Research shows students from a low SES often have limited experience in computer science, especially at the elementary age. Additionally, students from minority populations have even fewer opportunities to learn about technology. This results in a reduction in their chances of pursuing a future STEM career. But what if we could change that outcome? What if we could help to provide equitable and inclusive opportunities for minority students and students from a low SES to develop computer science skills?

Let's open the doors to opportunity as we help young innovators explore computer science.

My students are truly amazing. They love to create and explore and I want to cultivate that curiosity with hands-on computer science opportunities. Just imagine being able to code a micro:bit and then add it to the Code-A-Key Backpacks to make interactive controllers, pianos, and more! From here we can investigate how our innovations could help individuals with limited mobility. For example, we can create a controller that senses slight hand movements for an individual to play a piano or a game or even to communicate with others. But I don't want to stop there. Because I want all of my students to see themselves in STEM, we will learn about many of the amazing diverse individuals who have helped shape the computer science industry including Annie Easley, Frank Greene, Gladys West, and Roy L. Clay, Sr. As my students learn these individuals' stories through a set of videos, they will be inspired by their innovation and perseverance as they realize they too can make their dreams a reality. Through these experiences, my students will have the chance to dream big, create the impossible, and see how their ideas can create a better world for everyone.
