Taking It Home! Reading Beyond the Classroom

My students need a class literacy set. Kindergarten is where students learn to read and they also develop a love of reading. There are reading materials in the classroom but nothing for them to take home.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are excitable 5 and 6 year olds, who daily walk into our classroom filled with life, a willingness to learn, and a drive to succeed. In the beginning of the year, they are like a blank canvas. They know so little. Some have never been to school and a small percentage have. When they come to school, they find a safe haven which they enjoy being in. As a teacher, I spend my days trying to boost their self esteem and teach them that they can learn. I have confidence in my students and I want them to have the same confidence in themselves.

My school is a Title I school in California.

89 % of the students quality for free breakfast and lunch. 40.5 % of the students are English Language Learners. My school is a Full Service Community School where various different services are available to our students and families, yet in spite of all challenges, my students come to school with good attitudes and a love of learning.

My Project

By providing these books, it will enable parents to get involved in their child's education. I have individual take home bags with activities to do at home. The only thing missing is the books. This particular book set includes a cd, which will be beneficial for my the parents in my class who are non-English speakers.

These books will be sent home weekly with instructions for the parents and will be returned the following week.

Some families may not have access to books and I would like to provide them with the opportunity. This is also a way to teach my students responsibility.
