Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Third grade is a big year for students. This is the year they learn how to write in cursive, multiply and start reading to learn more about the world around them. Through the use of technology by my students we can achieve these milestones and more.

I have 24 bright and curious students in my classroom this year.

They love to work together and see themselves as members of a special community in room 21 rather than students in a classroom ruled by the teacher. They are very kind and work very hard. Unfortunately, many of my students come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The area around the school is plagued by violence and poverty and many of the children who attend our school reside in housing projects within the community. Many of my students also struggle in learning a second language as they come from homes and countries where English is not the native tongue. However, despite the lives that my students lead outside of the school and the challenges they face mastering the English language they come, everyday, ready to learn.

My Project

There are so many activities that my students will be able to do, that will not only prepare them for success in the Smarter Balance assessment, but will also significantly increase the learning they do in room 21. One of the primary reasons that students need computers in the classroom is to gain the typing and mousing skills they need for the Smarter Balance assessment. In this test students are asked to type out long responses using a keyboard. However, many of my students do not have a computer at home and the once-a-week practice they have in the computer lab is not enough for them to truly learn touch typing and how to use a computer mouse. Having laptops in the classroom will also help my students become more enthusiastic about their writing by having them publish their final writing pieces using a word-processor. Furthermore, computers in the classroom means I can integrate STEM into my students learning through using computer programs like Scratch and Junior Test Pilot School.

Receiving six laptop computers will have an immeasurable impact on the lives of my students.

My students will not only master the typing skills they need for future success, they will also become more enthusiastic about learning going on in the classroom through the integration of technology in reading, writing and mathematics. Furthermore, these laptops will allow for STEM in the classroom which will inspire students to pursue STEM careers and break the cycle of disadvantage my students face.
