Take Your Best Shot

My students need three cameras, cases, and memory cards to document their historical stories and to take part in a literature/photography contest, which coincides with the book, Shooting Kabul.

My Students

My students are 6th graders who enjoy coming to school and being a part of that experience. Our classroom motto is "Palma non sine pulvere," which translates to that there is no reward without effort. My students will be challenged and I will help all of them reach the challenge.

My students are mostly Title 1, but their interests in life are ever growing and it is a great reward to try and offer up some of what the world can offer to them.

They are predominantly Hispanic and come to school eager to learn. The school they attend is a very special place filled with teachers who care greatly for them and their successes and have high expectations in life and academics for each individual.

My Project

I am requesting cameras because I have found that my students have a very keen eye toward their subject matter in photography. I have previously used DonorsChoose to obtain cameras and every year they surprise me with just how far they are able to reach in their creativity. Last year, we read a book titled, Shooting Kabul, which was an absolutely beautiful book about how important family is and the struggles and sacrifices they make for each other. The main character takes part in a photography contest, which is why I need more cameras. I want to use the photography lessons in the book to help students discover new ways of looking into our world. They will also use the cameras to create their own history. The camera is a proven primary source that moves individuals into action and experience emotion, so my students will also learn to use the camera as a tool in documenting their world.

As our world becomes increasingly reliant on technology, we sometimes miss the human connection and human elements that make us a social creature.

I realize I am asking for a technological donation, but its use will be in helping my students reconnect and to voice their creativity and concerns, so that others will come to value them. This donation will help my students grow as people and eventually more empathetic to our local, national, and global community.
