My Students

I teach 25 happy and excited-to-learn third graders. All day long, they have fun growing, thinking, and trying their best. Our school is a wonderful, small multicultural school located in Los Angeles.

This project will help all the third grade students at our school go on a memorable and educational field trip to the Los Angeles County Arboretum.

The best way to learn is hands-on, and this docent-led tour of the Arboretum will be a wonderful experience for our third graders.

My students are sweet, caring, hard-working, and creative. They are an excitable group of 25 students in sunny Los Angeles. Approximately 32% of the students at our school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and everyone receives free breakfast daily.

My students speak English at school, and many speak Spanish, Tagalog, or another language at home. We are a wonderful mix of cultures, and we support each other as we grow and learn. The Native Americans who once lived in our area are called the Tongva. Our third grade curriculum is focused on learning about these Native Americans.

My Project

Our third grade students study the local Native Americans of our area, the Tongva, as part of our social studies curriculum. Going on a field trip to the Arboretum would be an amazing learning experience because the Arboretum has an Early California History tour the students will take. During the tour, the students will see a replica of a Tongva kiy—which is the domed home that the Tongva lived in.

Our students will be able to analyze how the kiy was made, walk inside of it, and draw it, too.

This will help our students better understand how the Tongva lived. When we return to school and continue our studies of the Tongva, the students will remember this field trip experience and all that they learned. Admission to the Arboretum is free, so we are requesting help with the cost of round trip bus transportation.

Our students will also learn how these Native Americans used the land for food, clothing, and shelter. Learning during the tour will be much more memorable than reading it in a book because the students will see replicas of the food, clothing, and shelter and see how the local natural environment at the Arboretum supplied the resources the Tongva needed long ago to live.

The tour will also teach the students about our local history during the Mission, Rancho, and American periods. They will tour a historic 1840 adobe house and other Arboretum historical landmarks: the Queen Anne Cottage, the Coach Barn, and the Santa Anita Railroad Depot, all from the 1880s. I know my students will love seeing what an old ice box and kitchen looked like long ago. Your help donating to this project means our third graders will be able to learn hands-on about our early Los Angeles history.
